Abstract

US secretary of state (1961–69) Dean Rusk (1909–94) was closely involved with the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis, NATO issues, and the war in Vietnam, tending to favor a cautious stance on most issues with the notable exception of the latter. He established only a distant relationship with President Kennedy but worked more closely with President Johnson. Both presidents appreciated his loyalty and his low‐key style. Although an indefatigable worker, Rusk exhibited little talent as a manager of the Department of State.
