Abstract

'Gifts to Kings', gathered together a range of installations which sought to highlight the hidden connections between France and the slave trade. Drawing on a number of narratives including that of Le Rodeur a French slave ship upon which the crew and enslaved Africans went blind, as well as Naming the Money whose original research originated in the ethnographical Museum La Rochelle this exhibition argues that the current position of French cultural commentators in relation to the Black French population is redundant. Conversations need to be had through the medium of public debate within the art gallery to redress the balance of French cultural whitewashing.
