Abstract

This book examines the emergence of the Sex Pistols in 1976 as the outgrowth of manager Malcolm McLaren's various artistic impulses - which had, since the mid-1960s, embraced abstract painting, filmmaking, installation art, and clothing design. It situates the genesis of the Sex Pistols in a collision of the worlds of art, fashion and rock music that was uniquely of its time and place, mid-70s London. And it further examines the implosion of the Sex Pistols as the result of the emergence of two competing and irreconcilable artistic visions - that of McLaren and of John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten).
