Abstract

An international Competition submission
Building on the heritage of the old paper factory; through the creation of Innovation Lounges that act as courtyards, connecting the university premises with the community and commercial services, a new future factory of innovation will be created, that defines a new approach to enterprise and learning.

The architectural approach establishes a Sinuous Stream of interplay between the program and local activities of the site. A matrix of innovation orientated towards the old paper factory.

A new factory for the future, a factory for innovation. In organising the building around this principle the building forms a series of mediating yards that navigate between the public and the private users of the buildings, creating seamless Creative Clusters set within a larger public yards.
Yards laid out here draw in the local community services and activities right into the heart of the buildings while opening up -and offering out- the building’s beating heart of innovation to the public and industry at large.

The buildings distinctive figure and architectural ensemble complements the old paper factories townscape with a creative edge which is alive with activity and innovation.

Within the building, public courtyards are interspersed with Innovation Lounges. Through these creative clusters a fresh and inspiring environment is created where users move between hyper co-creative and blended spaces upwards towards more intimate spaces for near and far learning.

Learning facilities are clustered around (4 of 12) nature based Thematic Yards each encompassing an Innovation Lounge, Atrium and Winter Garden, establishing a multitude of flexible spatial combinations: adaptable to the learners needs, the type of activity and the pedagogical approach chosen.
