Abstract

The article introduces the narrative text genre of travel writing and its relevance in the Americas from the colonial era to the present. After a short definition of the term "travel writing" and elaboration of major characteristics of the genre, the piece presents some of the key types of travel writing produced in or about the Americas. Loosely based on the chronological order of emergence, the article introduces readers to travel accounts of colonization and conquest, scientific expedition reports, narratives of social or political observation, and "literary" travelogues penned by professional writers of literature.
