Abstract

Fresh from their success at the final year art and design shows, a group of graduates from the University of Central Lancashire have been selected to take part in 'New Designers', the UK' s largest graduate design event.

Staged at the Business Design Centre in London, 'New Designers' is the major showcase in Britain for the future of design and aims to introduce the cream of British Design Graduates into the marketplace. The event attracts support from leading UK designers, such as Sir Terence Conran, Alexander McQueen and Wayne Hemingway, who have all visited and commissioned work from the exhibition.

Lancashire students Bernie Blackburn, from Preston and Heather Scott from Ormskirk are amongst the University's graduates who will be taking part in the exhibition, which takes place over two weeks, from 4th to 14th July. Bernie, from Lea has already attracted attention with his innovative furniture designs, based on decorative double glazed units, similar to those used in window design. Heather has produced a range of jewellery, which aims to reflect the stark urban landscape. Working with stainless steel, her necklace designs with their interlocking pieces are influenced by the strength and power of the construction industry.
