Abstract

Research Student Paul Stapleton will be presenting an exciting, innovative composition
at the Preston Guildhall, designed to remove the familiar and the connotative from a
theatrical experience.
The performance, scheduled for 27 May 2002, will be displayed 'in the round' with the
audience given the opportunity to judge the work. It consists of music, dance, stage
design, acting, costumes - all the elements of a total performance. Entitled composition
c, it will explore unfamiliar rhythms using specially made acoustic instruments; actors'
speeches will consist of sounds independent from language; their movements will create
tension between the voice and the body and the choreography will portray motion as
pure form. As Project Director, Paul has assembled a team, including a scriptwriter,
choreographers, designers and performers, working in collaboration to produce a
composition designed to provide both audio and visual stimulation.
The performance is an integral part of Paul's PhD research at the University of Central
Lancashire in Preston. Originally from the USA, Paul, 23, is a graduate of the
University's Contemporary Performing Arts degree. Through his research he aims to
develop non-objective music-based composition and total theatre.
This presents an exciting opportunity for audiences to come along to witness and
experience the work of a bright, young innovative and experimental artist. The
performance itself, plus the creative process behind it will be produced as a
documentary and included as part of Paul's PhD research.
