Abstract

The University of Central Lancashire is delighted at the news that Preston has been granted
city status. Preston has all the attributes a city needs and this well deserved honour
recognises its place in the life and work of Lancashire and the North West region. The
University of Central Lancashire is proud to have played a part in the bid for city status. The
University, which is one of the ten largest in the country, makes a significant contribution to
the new city's economy with its 28,000 students and the largest of its campuses in the centre
of Preston.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Ian Haythorntwaite, who is a member of the Preston Local Strategic
Partnership, said: "I am very pleased that all the hard work done by the Borough and its
partners has borne fmit. Preston is an important centre of opportunity and its new status as a
city recognizes and celebrates this. The City of Preston will bring its own benefits to the
University of Central Lancashire with its increased standing throughout the county and
region as a whole."
