Abstract

Sister Caroline Mary Kissane, who belongs to the order of the Little Sisters of the Poor,
was recently awarded the Mary Hodkinson prize for Nurses at the University of Central
Lancashire Awards' Ceremony in Preston.
Sister Caroline, who currently works at the nursing home on Garstang Road, received top
marks for her performance on the nursing diploma course. Originally from Birmingham,
she joined the order at the age of 19. After completing her religious training in the Irish
Republic, she travelled to France, back to Ireland and finally to Preston to undertake her
nursing education. Roles within the order had previously included Personnel Officer in
charge of 60 staff in the Waterford nursing home.
Sister Caroline has now enrolled upon the one-year top up nursing degree at the
University and will continue to work at the nursing home after graduation.
The Mary Hodkinson Prize of £500 is awarded by the University Foundation. The prize
was made possible by funds generated from the sale of the book "Mary, Mary, Nurse
Contrary- The Life of Mary Alicia Hodkinson". The book's author, Anne Bradley
presented the prize.
Mary Hodkinson was a pioneer in her chosen profession of nursing and dedicated herself
to the cause of those unable to fight for themselves. In her later years, she was well
known to the University for her work with the Life Long Learning Group. Her life has
been chronicled in Anne Bradley's book and funds raised have enabled the Mary
Hodkinson Prize for nurses to be created in her memory.
