Abstract

Special ceremony to mark construction phase of £6.5m Students' Union
The fences have been erected, the site has been cleared and now the major work is underway
to construct the new £6.5 million Students' Union building at the University of Central
Lancashire (UCLan).
Over 1,264 m3 of concrete, 250 tonnes of steel and 52,000 bricks will be used during the
project which is due to be completed in December 2004. The new building is expected to be
one of the largest Students' Unions in the UK with an additional 1900 sq.m. of space being
created.
And at a special ceremony, to be held at lOam on Friday, 6 February, UCLan Vice
Chancellor, Dr Malcolm McVicar and Students' Union Vice President, Sarah Caine, will be
joined by Terry Cook, Marketing Director for Totty Construction, to lay the first bricks of the
landmark building.
"The completion of this stunning building will be of major benefit, not only to students but to
young people in Preston and Lancashire," said Sarah Caine. "For the first time we'll have a
major live venue with a capacity of 1200 that will attract headline acts from the entertainment
industry."
Dr Malcolm McVicar, UCLan Vice-Chancellor, said that the completion of the new Students'
Union will greatly benefit the future growth of the University as a whole, and will enhance
the quality of student life on campus. "Our students work extremely hard and where better to
receive support, re-energize and relax than in the contemporary surroundings of this new
development. This building will greatly increase the facilities for UCLan students. Once
completed it will be one of the best Students' Unions in the country."
Terry Cook, Marketing Director for Totty Construction, said: "The new Students' Union
building is set to become a key focal point for the University, and undoubtedly prove a highly
popular leisure venue for students living in the city."
