Abstract

As well as being an expert in e-learning, Dr Frank McCluskey is a volunteer Fire Chief in New York, so it was only natural that when he was invited to a conference at the University of Central Lancashire that he asked to meet Lancashire Fire Fighters.

When the World Trade Centre was hit on 11 September, the volunteer fire chiefs worked to cover the gaps throughout the city left by the full-time fire fighters who were drawn into the major emergency. Normally these officers would have returned to the station and stood down, but, as we now know, at least 300 firefighters perished when the towers collapsed.

Dr McCluskey will meet Assistant Chief Officer John Williamson who has just returned from the New York where he represented the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at the memorial for the dead firefighters. The meeting will take place on Monday 22 October at 1 pm at the Fire and Rescue HQ on Garstang Road, Preston.

Dr McCluskey is Dean of Higher Education e-learning programmes at New York's Mercy College, which is a major provider of distance learning courses in the US. He will be sharing his expertise in this field with senior academics at the University of Central Lancashire.
