Abstract

Defined under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as semi-enclosed seas, East Asian seas are abundant not only in rich marine resources, but also with overlapping claims and maritime disputes, which would trigger and/or escalate tensions and even armed conflict in the relevant maritime areas, thus endangering peace and security which is necessary for economic development and better life of people living around these seas. This article is designed to examine the recent developments in maritime conflict and cooperation in East Asia in a legal perspective and explores the future possible solutions for perpetual maritime peace and security.
