Abstract
The temperance movement, advocating either moderate use of alcohol or complete abstinence, was one of the most significant social and cultural influences for reform in the nineteenth century. It was ever-present for many Victorian writers and readers. Various groups and movements in the US and UK differed in their definitions of temperance and in their suggested solutions. Temperance literature was widely popular and its tropes influenced many more general narratives.
