Abstract
In common with many other parts of the UK, Lancashire has large black and minority ethnic communities, particularly a large, growing South Asian (predominantly Pakistani Muslim) population, a large proportion of whom are under the age of 15. In some areas, 51 per cent of the total school leaving population at 16 years is drawn from these communities. However, these communities remain under-represented in the healthcare professions in the area.
