After reading this chapter you should be able to:
• Outline key social and cultural contexts that inform how entertainment and media are directly interlinked;
• Define core aspects of mass and new media and identify changes and continuities across the two;
• Identify different aspects of production, messages and audiences as three core elements of media, whilst recognising the links between and across them;
• Outline different theoretical approaches to media;
• Assess how mega-events such as the Olympics and Paralympics offer opportunities and challenges to entertainment managers across local and global contexts.
