Abstract

From October 29th to January 13th 2017 The People’s History Museum, Manchester hosted a solo exhibition by the Institute of Urban Dreaming (IUD) www.phm.org.uk/whatson/promising-home/. The exhibition displayed research materials from IUDs extensive archives about the demise of social housing, the processes of ruination, displacement by development and the privatization of public space in Pendleton, Salford UK.

Central to the exhibit was IUDs ‘temporary research space’
https://iudblog.org/2016/10/26/promising-home-the-temporary-research-space/. The research space made available a range of research materials that critically examine the changing state of council housing in Pendleton, Salford.

To accompany the exhibition and research space IUD hosted a one-day symposium on November 18th examining how contemporary art practices engage with the current housing crisis. The event consisted of a series of talks and round table discussions at the People’s History Museum. The talks can be accessed on the URL below: https://iudblog.org/2016/12/17/conference-recordings-art-practices-the-housing-crisis/

To conclude IUD’s time at the People’s History Museum a closing event entitled ‘Demand Utopia’ was staged on January 12th with talks by:

Nick Mansfield - ‘Owenites, Chartists to Clarion Socialists and their educational spaces’

Professor Loretta Lees - Gentrification & Displacement

The talks can be accessed on the URL below:
