Abstract

'Eminönü and Üsküdar' is a short composition from field recordings captured in Eminönü, a ferry port in the western (European) side of Istanbul and Üsküdar, a port on the eastern (Asian) side of the city. The composition captures the vibrant and complex sounds in both places including the vocals of street sellers, megaphone announcements and the call for prayer. This is juxtaposed with water sounds of the Bosphorus and the engines of the busy waterway traffic.

The projet explores the cultural complexities of Istanbul, and examine if, and how, the cultural boundaries of ‘West’ and ‘East’ are reflected in the soundscape of the city. As a rapidly growing city, Istanbul is continually developing new connections between the two continents on which it sits. The Marmaray rail opened in October 2013 and the completion of Yavuz Sultan Selim - the third Bosphorus Bridge is planned for 2015. East [hyphen] West will map this shifting soundscape and capture the sonic environment of Istanbul at a particular point in time.

Kinokophone welcomes field recordists, phonographers and listeners to join us for Kinokophonography.

'Kinokophonography is a curated sound cinema event that features audio works from around the world. It is a unique public gathering in celebration of the sounds around us, exploring the experience of listening by sharing sound recordings and discussing what the recordings and the process of making them can bring to life!'
