Abstract

Join us at the University of Central Lancashire’s Westlakes campus to celebrate the launch of ‘West Cumbria: On the Edge’, a new publication from In Certain Places, which explores the nature and characteristics of a place often overlooked.

We will be taking a short coach tour of some of the places featured in the book with your guide - and the book’s author - John Scanlan, and In Certain Places’ co-curator Charles Quick, Professor of Public Art Practice at UCLan.

‘West Cumbria: On the Edge’ is an exploration of a place that has existed throughout its modern history on the edge of things. Drawing insights from cultural and economic history, geography, architecture and the built environment, as well as literary and artistic representations, John Scanlan presents a perspective on a place defined not only by its western location, its coast and other boundaries, but by its existence on the margins of the Lake District, an unknown or forgotten place that by contrast with its more celebrated neighbour has always pushed up against and into the future.
