Abstract

In 2016 Hamburger Kunsthalle launched Drawing Rooms 2 the second in its series of drawing survey shows. This version focused on contemporary developments in drawing and particularly drawing informed through technological and media developments. The roll of animation within these developments, was considered in the show through the inclusion of a show reel of artists films selected by the curator Petra Roettig from Lines Fiction a web based artists animation project developed by Bettina Munk in Berlin. *‘Bettina Munk brings together artists who combine drawing and animation to create interaction between the two media.’ David Mackintosh ‘The Curtain’ 2011 was one of the selected animations.
The exhibition included an impressive range of renowned international artists and ran from 25th November 2016 to 21st May 2017. During that time; the year 2016/17, The Hamburger Kunsthalle which is one of the largest museums in Germany had record visitor figures. 562,018.
A dvd addition to the catalogue for Drawing Rooms 1 entitled ‘Lines Fiction in der Hamburger Kunsthalle’, including Mackintosh’s animation was produced for the exhibition.
Deutsche Bank art Magazine said of the show; ‘With the exhibition Drawing Rooms the Hamburger Kunsthalle shows how the medium of drawing is conquering space and being set in motion in animations. While the first part of this exhibition project illustrated the development from the 1950s to current positions, the second part focuses on wall drawings, installations, and virtual animations.’
