Abstract

This paper outlines a method for the modelling of a precision spindle supported by ball bearings. The support bearings are represented as piece-wise linear springs with damping provided by concentrated forces external to the bearings at each end of the spindle. The simplified damping model can simulate the squeeze film effect exerted by seals. The main elastic modes of the spindle vibrations are considered and the results corresponding to various machine tool spindle designs under various operating conditions are presented.
