Abstract

A critical depiction of Redrock multi-storey car park and cinema in Stockport, “Grey Wall” exposes the impoverishment of contemporary popular culture in a northern British town. Designed by BDP, this commercial development won the Building Design architectural magazine Carbuncle Cup in 2018 for "the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months". This accolade echoed round the world (New York Times, 6th September 2018), but has not yet appeared in the pages of Marketing Stockport: surely no advertising is bad advertising? Painting excuted in grey primer paint car spray and yellow road marking paint, exhibited at Stockport Art Gallery 2018.
