Abstract

Composing with Paint and Sound

Christine Eyene in Conversation with Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska-Beavan

"Over the past seven years, Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska-Beavan have developed a collaboration in which voice, music and sound compositions enter into a dialogue with the painted or visual matter. Narrations, thoughts, poems and other words born out of Himid's memories and imagination, form the textual threads and motifs of Stawarska-Beavan's sonic tapestries. At first inscribed within two separate creative practices, their latest collaborations reveal a collective thinking in the development of most recent installations. As an observer of this growing creative relationship from its early stages, and as a specialist in sound art, I discussed with the artists their thoughts on collaborating and sonic resonances."
