Abstract

In this chapter, we focus on Kenya’s nascent algorithmic and data accountability system and a news industry increasingly receptive to technological innovations as a response to the myriad challenges facing the sector. We look at the state of data regulation and policy debate in the country and their impact on news media's use of personal data within the context of emerging news distribution practices. We document how Kenya’s accountability practices and discourses are shaping up as a new data protection law takes effect. We see newsrooms receptive to news automation and other innovative technologies, but with limited assessment of their implications on personal data use, consumer data protection rights, and the gaps in accountability processes.
