Abstract

This chapter will explore: the prison social world, and prisoner adaptations to this world; key classic texts and their contributions to prison sociology; the role and origins of prison culture, focusing particularly on the deprivation vs importation debate; and the significance of time and place to prison culture and social dynamics.
