Abstract
This chapter will explore: the characteristics of the prison population; the range of sentences and offence types for which people are imprisoned; the reflection of societal inequalities in the disproportionate imprisonment of particular groups; and the marginalising impacts of imprisonment for prisoners, their families and communities.
