Abstract

This chapter is a complement to Chapter 8 in that it surveys previous research that involves contrastive pragmatic studies between one or more East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) and some non–East Asian language(s) (mostly English). Similar to what was reported in Chapter 8, the contrastive studies reviewed here may concern each of the dimensions dealt with in Part 1 and Part 2. Nonetheless, special attention will be paid to pragmatic differences between the East Asian languages and languages from other parts of the world.
