Abstract
Temperance tracts were often given to young children, and one young reader was inspired to write and draw his own. Attempts have been made to reproduce the sampler effect of cross stitch in the title, and typical tract illustrations, on this cover page. The item is too fragile to reproduce fully, but it shows that, in the year the Band of Hope was founded, many children were aware of Temperance.

Woe unto him that is mighty to drink wine
The teetotal principle is supported and sanctioned by the Holy Bible
The Holy Angels do testefy to the same I think
Woe unto him that gieveth his neighbour drink
