Abstract
Alternatives to the pub, with a variety of names such as coffee palaces, cocoa rooms, and even public houses, existed in almost every town in the country by the end of the nineteenth century. Here, a coffee tavern sponsored by the British Workman temperance magazine in Liverpool is shown in 1878, one of many.
