Abstract

The collection of essays and illustrations in this catalogue are all in celebration of a ground-breaking exhibition running from March to November 2023 at the Judges' Lodgings Museum in Lancaster featuring new commissioned portraits of six Black Lancastrians by Kendal-based artist Lela Harris. Her portraits are informed by historical research including family stories, church and other public records. The Facing the Past exhibition was made possible by grants from the Art Fund, the Association of Independent Museums and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the exhibition catalogue and launch event on 18 July were funded by the Research Centre for Migration, Diaspora and Exile at UCLan.
