Abstract

This image, used on the early covers of Onward (1865-1910) shows several key features of Band of Hope iconography. Temperance, bearing the shield of the Pledge, protects children and tramples on the snake of evil. The Biblical motto, from Proverbs 22:6, was frequently used.
