Abstract
The children’s magazine the Band of Hope Review printed this exemplary tale in 1861, encouraging its young readers to see the material benefits in abstinence.
WHAT A COALHEAVER DID WITH THIRTY SHILLINGS PER WEEK IN 1840.
He expended on Drink and Tobacco half his Weekly earnings.
WHAT THE SAME MAN DID WITH THIRTY SHILLING PER WEEK IN 1841.
He then became an Abstainer.
He maintained his Family with his Weekly earnings; and put four shillings per week in the SAVINGS’ BANK !
WHAT THAT MAN DID IN 1851, WITH HIS SAVINGS FROM DRINK AND TOBACCO.
He then had upwards of
ONE HUNDRED POUNDS !
He commenced business for himself,and is now, by God’s blessing, in 1861,
A PROSPEROUS TRADESMAN.
