Abstract

This Band of Hope pledge was printed by the Lancashire and Cheshire region, and has been customised for a Baptist group. Bands of Hope were often set up by religious groups.

Western Baptist Band of Hope
This is to Certify
That...
is a MEMBER of the above Society having signed the following
PLEDGE
By Divine Assistance I will abstain from all
INTOXICATING DRINKS as Beverages, and discountenance
all the causes and practices of Intemperance.
Signed E. Ashworth No
Emma Gateson Secretary

Prevention is better than cure

Wine is a mocker
Strong Drink is raging
And whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise

Look not upon the wine for at last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder

Abhor that which is evil
Cleave to that which is good.

Lead us not into temptation.
