Hackney and East Middlesex commemorative certificate

Abstract

This is a commemorative certificate given to Dr Frederick Lees in 1894 for his long service to the temperance cause throughout the country, presented by the Hackney and East Middlesex Band of Hope of Union. Lees wrote for and edited many publications, engaged in public debate, and worked for teetotalism tirelessly from 1835 until his death in 1897.

Dear Sir,

The Hackney and East Middlesex Band of Hope Union, desire to place on record their very high appreciation of the distinguised services which you have rendered to the Temperance Reform during your illustrious career.

They recall with interest, that it is nearly Sixty-years since you publicly championed the cause of Total Abstinence in the Leeds Music Hall, against Dr James Williamson, and they rejoice to welcome you in your Eightieth year as a brilliant, fearless, and unswerving exponent of the greatest moral reform to which a man can consecrate his life.

Your faithful devotion to principle through a long series of public controversies, and your luminous deliverances on the Scientific and Philosophical phases of the Temperance Question, alike command our admiration and affectionate regard; and we earnestly pray that the Giver of all Good may grant you such sweet thoughts of himself, as shall make the coming days better than thebest of the bright days, which have made up your happy and honourable life.
