Abstract

This image of Lady Henry Somerset is from 1891, the year after she was elected President of the British Women’s Temperance Association. Influenced by the more politicised US women’s temperance movement, she moved the organisation in the direction of overall social amelioration, espousing suffrage and social welfare causes, and many council members left to start the Women’s Total Abstinence Union in 1893.
