Abstract
The story to which this is an illustration is representative of the sensational nature of many temperance narratives. This is from a collection of ‘papers illustrative of the temperance question’ published in 1858, titled The Crack Club. Dramatic incidents such as this one would capture the reader’s attention.
“Going to his lodgings, he seized a pistol, and putting it to his temple, blew out his brains.” – page 90.
