Abstract

The American engraver Nathaniel Currier had published a version of ‘the Tree of Intemperance’ in 1849, showing the vices and evils which grow from drink. In this 1852 image from The Teetotal Progressionist the focus changes to the two groups pulling on the tree. The drink trade and the moderationists both keep it in balance. Only the teetotallers with their axes can destroy it.
