Abstract

The UK Alliance, the organisation set up to campaign for legal restrictions on drink, presented this digest of Lancashire press reports where drink was involved, for the last six months of 1929. It gives some fascinating insights into behaviour, and attitudes to this, in the late nineteen twenties.

5. Labourer creating disturbance in street.
6. A man charged with doing wilful damage to a window and panel.
7. A quarrel between two men about one’s cruelty to a frog.
8. Man charged with maliciously wounding a detective.
9. Family quarrel in a caravan.
10. Two men summoned for breaking windows by throwing stones.
11. Two men charged with obstructing the police.
12. A man charged with setting an office on fire.
13. A man charged with refusing to pay his tram fare at Southport and using offensive language.
14. A man charged with throwing a stone through a large plate glass window, value £40.
15. A man charged with ill-treating a horse and cruelly beating it.
16. Four cases of pulling connection cord on account of drunken quarrels.

(1) ILLEGAL SUPPLY (9 cases).

1. T.L., steward of – Liberal Club, fined for supplying drink to non-member. Application for club to be struck off ; adjourned.
2. Three clubs struck off:
- British Legion Club : illegal sales and used for the purposes of betting.
- British Legion Club : Purposes of betting.
- Labour Club : illegal sales.
3. Ivy League Club struck off : illegal sales.
4. Steward, Secretary and two non-members, Northern Speedway Club (Manchester) fined for supplying drink during non-permitted hours.
5. Tenth Manchester Veterans British Legion Club : struck off : not conducted in good faith ; liquor supplied to non-members.
6. Aubrey Members Club : Chief Constable applies for it to be struck off : drinks served at 11.15 p.m.
7. Bootle Members Social Club : drinks supplied to 8.20 a.m. to non-member dock employees. Struck off.
8. Liverpool Mariners Members Club : illegal sales night after night : drink supplied to non-members.
9. Bootle United Trades Hall : struck off : intoxicants supplied during non-permitted hours.

(2) DRINKING SCENES CONNECTED WITH CLUBS (4 cases).

1. S.E. (25) charged with assault : dispute and fight at club.
2. H.P., two months’ hard labour for causing bodily harm to steward of Working Men’s Club : refused drink as non-member : attacked steward and broke his leg.
