| Additional Information: | This posthumously published article by Prof Malcolm Chase of Leeds University was co-edited by RP and Prof. Fabrice Bensimon of Sorbonne University, Paris. Following Chase's tragic death in 2020, the editors worked with the author's widow to recover the research material from his computer, including three drafts of this unpublished paper which were edited into a single, fully-referenced article. They also recovered his research materials and sources and worked with Mark Crail of the Chartist Ancestors website and other individual scholars to make to make them available to the public and to other postgraduate and early career researchers. They worked with the Society for the Study of Labour History in two Chartism day conferences in Newcastle in June 2022 and in Sheffield in June 2023 to commemorate the work of Chase and promote awareness of his legacy. |
