Manhood, in Cultures of Honor: For Social Status

Abstract

Social status is the relative position, or rank, that an individual holds within a hierarchy of social groups and can be achieved through either dominance or prestige strategies. Dominant tactics can be harmful to others, and typically involves violence, intimidation, and coercion. Prestige is beneficial to both the individual and others within their community and, using this strategy, social status can be earnt through the sharing of skills and expertise. For men in particular, social status is impermanent, and must be continuously maintained.
