A GOOD WORK
Those people who are in the habit of sneering at Christianity because their early anticipations have not been completely fulfilled should read the report of the Shepherd-street Mission. This is only one of the Preston agencies for helping the poor and needy. During the year thousands of the hungry and as many more of the homeless sheltered. It was at one time conjectured that a missionary in lands benighted fulfilled his duty when he had provided each of his black brethren with a tract and a blanket. But owing to funds contributed by the public of Preston tracts and books to the number of twenty thousand have been given to the unfortunates who have to spend their lives in lodging-houses. These crowded lodging-houses are a product of 20th century life in England, where the poor are every year steadily becoming poorer. The mission has provided nearly twenty thousand meals for little children: Fifteen thousand starving men have been given shelter and work next day, while about eight thousand men have been provided with supper, breakfast or dinner. Such beneficence as this is one of the illustrations of real Christianity, the funds for which are provided by people of all religious denominations. Is it not time for the cause of all this degrading poverty found in the shelters and lodging-houses of our towns to be dealt with practically?
