FEEDING THE HUNGRY
This week a start has been made with the feeding of poor children in Preston, and the above photograph gives a typical scene at Shepherd-street Mission, the largest centre for the distribution of free meals, where yesterday about 100 children were provided with potato-hash and bread ad lib. Many of the children had no breakfast, and devoured the food ravenously, afterwards clamouring for more. At present three centres have been arranged for the feeding of the children, but next week it is expected the arrangements will be completed for covering the whole of the schools in the borough. At Shepherd-street yesterday Miss Kneale, superintendent of the Domestic Science Centre, Mr Williamson, of Shepherd-street Mission, and Mr F. J. Mehew, hon. Secretary of the N.S.P.C.C. for the district, were actively engaged in attending to the starving little ones.
