Abstract

SHEPHERD-STREET MISSION

Over 200 persons attended a garden fete in the grounds of the Shepherd-street Mission Children’s Home. Though it was the first of its kind, the effort was in every way a success, and it is anticiuated that the funds of the Home will benefit considerably in consequence.
Alderman H. Astley-Bell. J. P., performed the opening ceremony, while the Mayor (Councillor W. Lucas), accompanied by the Mayoress, presided. Among those present were Alderman and Mrs. Durham, Dr. and Mrs. Stanwell, Mr. and Mrs. George Toulmin, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Margerison. Mrs. I. Marsden, Mrs A. E. Cartmell, and Mr. and Mrs A. Spencer.
Alderman Astley-Bell commented on the healthy appearance of the children in the home, which, he said, reflected great credit on Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick, superintendent and Matron of the Home and Mission. The Mayor also paid tribute to the work done there, and mentioned that an increase in the number of children had necessitated and extension in the building. He was sure that the public of Preston would not fail to supply the extra money necessary to complete the work.
A bouquet was presented to the Mayoress by an inmate of the Home, Miss Alice Leeming. During the afternoon, the visitors inspected the interior of the Home, and were agreeably surprised at the comforts provided for the children. The Preston Town Band was in attendance and a number of the girls joined in folk dances on on the lawn.

1929:
Shepherd Street Mission

There were enthusiastic scenes at the annual Christmas treat given by the Shepherd Street Mission on Christmas morning and over 1,200 little ones were fed. The Mayor and Mayoress attended along with the chairman of the committee of the Home (Mr. W.A. Margerison) and were greeted with much applause from the children.

At the Home, the 51 kiddies were visited by Father Christmas overnight, and each child found presents of toys, fruit and confections. Some of the old boys and girls came home again for Christmas.

In the evening there was a most delightful party and beautifully decorated Christmas Tree.
