Abstract
The constantly changing attack patterns and the high cost of investigation has necessitated the need for using open source tool for Mobile device data forensics investigations. These devices face a huge number of attacks such as mobile app attacks, MITM attacks, bluejacking, malware and phishing attacks among others. This paper aims at presenting a hypothetical mobile device attack using social engineering followed by a thorough forensic analysis. This comprehensive analysis includes, network traffic examination, malicious app analysis and disk image inspection, making the contribution of this paper three fold. Moreover, this paper also underscores the importance of using cost-effective and reliable open source tools compliant with NIST SP 800-101r1 for accurate data analysis. Additionally, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of these tools in uncovering crucial data artifacts and understanding the methods used in cyberattacks
