News release: Youngsters rewarded for doing their bit

Abstract

Ten dedicated young people will be receiving awards for all their hard work within the
local community at a special ceremony held at the University of Central Lancashire in
Preston.
Aged between 16 and 24, they have all taken part in Millennium Volunteers projects
based in Preston and Bumley. The projects are all part of the successful University of
Central Lancashire Millennium Volunteers scheme, which was established over 2 years
ago.
Under the scheme, young people are encouraged to volunteer their time to benefit others,
by joining volunteer groups, or developing their own ideas. Their aim is to achieve 100
or 200 hours of Millennium Volunteer activity, or MV hours, when they are presented
with an Award of Excellence. Activities include: editing and marketing a youth
magazine; sports coaching; designing websites; performing arts, and setting up and
managing a campus-based charity shop.
The awards will be presented by Charlie Hooper, Director of Connexions Lancashire and
the event will be taking place on Monday 1 July, from 12 noon to 2.00pm in the Harris
Building, University of Central Lancashire, Preston.
