News release: Serial Killers and Astronauts rub shoulders in University

Abstract

Serial Killers, Astronauts, Fat Burning Exercises are all pmt of the exciting subjects that
the University of Central Lancashire is sharing with the public during National Science
Week from 8-16 March.
The Faculty of Science is throwing open its doors to encourage the public to come and
see how science is pmt and pm·cel of everyday life. Experts will be on hand to explain
and enthrall throughout the whole week and hopefully, people will be surprised and
fascinated by the things they see.
How do they profile serial killers? Come and find out at a lecture at 7pm on 11 March in
the Harrington Lecture Theatre, where forensic psychologists will give a rare insight (and
demonstrations) into their work. This is suitable for people over the age of 14.
Or have you ever wondered how fingerprinting, footprinting, DNA profiling and
handwriting can be used to trap criminals. Come to the Forensic Science Laboratories
between 6 - 8pm on 12 and 13 March where experts will show you.
\ Heavens Above - Its an Astronaut! Find out about life in space from a real live astronaut
as Commander Alexander Volkov gives a lecture and film show at 7pm in the Foster
Building lecture theatre on 14 March. The University also has its own planetarium at
Alston Observatory and school children can go on their own trip around the universe on
13 March.
Fighting the Flab? Our sports scientists will show you how the body burns fat as school
children are invited to the biology labs to get an insight into exercise physiology, between
9.30- 12 noon on 11 March.
Schools also get a chance to look at the way Psychologists examine human behaviour
with a range of different equipment, and all through the week they can take part in a
forensic competition as teams of four look at climes with expert help and the winning
team at the end of the week will be the ones who discovered "whodunit!"
