Abstract

Pupils from St Bede' s High School in Blackburn and Barden High School in Burnley
have designed a range of new litter bins which they hope will encourage their fellow
pupils to clear up after themselves.
On Monday 4 March, the winning designs will be selected at an event at the
University of Central Lancashire and the winning teams will each receive a prize of
giJt vouchers and art products.
The bins have been designed as part of the University's "HE into Schools" project,
which involves undergraduate students spending time in high schools in Lancashire
and working with pupils to solve a particular problem.
Pupils at St Bede's and Barden wanted to tackle the problem of litter and so set about
designing the new litter bins, assisted by their project workers from the University.
All the teams involved will enjoy lunch at the University on Monday before the
winning designs are announced.
The panel of judges includes Annette Mercer from Keep Britain Tidy, Steven Bennett,
design lecturer at the University and Peter Hill, Enviromnent Officer at the
University.
