Abstract
Sarah Solan, 21, from Spennymoor, has won a national prize for being the best student
on her degree course at University.
A former pupil of StJohn's RC Comprehensive School, Sarah is now a student at the
University of Central Lancashire in Preston. She won the Society for General
Microbiology (SGM) prize for being the best second year student on a tnicrobiology
degree.
Head of Department, Professor Bill Winlow, congratulated Sarah and presented her
with a certificate and a cheque for £50.
"I felt really privileged just to be nominated for the award and I really didn't expect
anything to come of it," says Sarah. "When I heard that I'd won I was shocked, but
obviously delighted."
Sarah is currently in the fmal year of her degree course and is working hard on her final
year research project. She is considering doing a PhD after completing her degree.
