News release: UCLan offers scholarships to mark Transit of Venus

Abstract

Scholarships of £500 will be available for up to ten students who wish to take up a place on a Physics, Astronomy and Maths course at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in 2004.

The Jeremiah Horrocks Scholarships will be awarded in honour of the Preston-based scientist who first observed the Transit of Venus in 1639. The next Transit of Venus will be taking place in June 2004 and, in addition to awarding the scholarships, the University will be hosting an international astronomy conference to mark this once-in-alifetime event (see www.transit-of-venus.org.uk).

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must make a course in the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics their firm choice under UCAS. The scholarships will be awarded by a panel of judges, who will base their decisions upon A-level results as soon as these are released, with the money being payable upon successful enrolment in the Department.
