Abstract
The University of Central Lancashire will pay tribute to distinguished citizens at its Degree and
Awards Ceremonies next week when it confers Honorary Fellowships upon eight people earmarked to
be ideal role models for its students.
Former Preston North End and Liverpool footballer, now a successful football broadcaster, Mark
Lawrenson, is among those receiving an award, as is fellow BBC broadcaster, Eric Robson, presenter
of Radio 4' s Gardeners' Question Time and Chair of Cumbria Tourist Board.
Others to be honoured are Seamus Heaney, critically acclaimed poet; Alison Norman CBE, Director of
Nursing and Operations at Christie Hospital Manchester; Terry Eagleton, academic and literary critic;
Tom Bloxham MBE, founder of innovative property developers, Urban Splash; Dr Peter Jost,
renowned industrialist; and Brigadier Alex Birtwistle in recognition of a distinguished military career
and his handling of the foot-and-mouth outbreak in Lancashire and Cumbria.
