Abstract
Motor Sports students at the University of Central Lancashire are hot on the wheels of
further success when they enter the 2003 Formula Student Competition.
Five final year students on the BEng (Hons) Motor Sports Engineering degree have
designed and built a single seater car for a project which has formed part of their
academic studies. The competition will come to an end later this month, when they'll
get the chance to meet and compete with teams from all over the world at the special
Formula Student Event in Leicester. In addition to the engineering challenge, the
students are responsible for the marketing, time management, costing and budgeting of
the project.
The University has been running a motor sports engineering degree for the past four
years and the student team, UCLan Racing has already had considerable success in
Formula Ford championships. Final year students in the special Formula UCLan team
have gained lots of hands-on experience which will equip them for designing and
building the entry for the competition and the students are feeling confident about the
challenge.
"We're a small team, compared to other universities, but we've got a good chance of
impressing the judges at the event with our simple and effective designs," says Daniel
Boardman, technical director of the project and final year student. "One of the main
aims of the project is to prove our skills to potential employees to help develop our
future careers. If there's anyone out there who is interested in sponsoring us and using
all the skills we've acquired, please get in touch!"
